Astradeel picked for the Wairio Cup

ASTRADEEL is my selection for Sunday’s Wairio Cup in Invercargill. This horse handles heavy going and has taken on better fields than this. He finished third in the Riverton Cup on Easter Saturday. He finished fifth in the Great Autumn Stakes last time and that was on the fourth of May so he will be fit. He has a good record on Southland tracks.

PEECEE PUSSYCAT is a longshot to consider and has won in heavy going in the North Island but whether he can cope with a Southland heavy track is a question which we will get the answer to here.

Myers Team a good chance of an early treble at Te Rapa

The Kevin Myers trained team have three horses engaged at Te Rapa on Saturday and they all have a good chance of winning. Lochwinnoch ran second at Hawera 21/4 and is overdue. He has raced three times at the course and distance for a place. 

Kickon has won five times at the mile and being on a 7-day backup will be fit. He is second up.

Hey Happy ran third over steeples at Hawera and will be fitter for that run. 

The going was good at Hawera so the two horses that ran that day can be expected to improve with rain about.

Capo Del Impero picked for the Canterbury Gold Cup

CAPO DEL IMPERO is good enough to add the Canterbury Gold Cup to the Cromwell and Waikouaiti Cups which he has won earlier this season. After his impressive Waikouaiti Cup winner under 60kg he finished 5^th in the Dunedin Gold Cup after conceding weight all round. His next start was in the Riverton Cup where he carried 61kg in heavy going. An impossible task and you just have to wonder why an apprentice claimer was not engaged. Capo Del Empero ran second in this race last year. I tipped him in last year’s race and he can go one better. It is also worth noting that the stable has won this race with Inferno, Tommy Tucker, and Sand Sweeper in the past. HES A DOOZY and MATSCOT are the big dangers. He’s A Doozy ran second in the Awapuni Gold Cup last time but 2000m is not his favoured distance while Matscot won the Southern Alps Challenge last year and you just have to wonder how much that race has taken out of him. Still he is a 6 time winner at Riccarton and not to be taken lightly.

BOLD BELLE can win the City of Napier Sprint first up. This mare has won three of her twelve starts; two of her wins were first up and the other was second up. She has had two trials to prepare for this so another first up win is on the cards. ARIS ARIS finished a close second at Tauranga last time and she is a winning chance in t his. All of her wins have been on slow tracks.

Nepheti hard to beat at Riccarton

Nepoheti has the form line to take out the NZB Airfreight Stakes at Riccarton providing that the track is good on Saturday, otherwise it may pay to look elsewhere. Nepheti has won three of her six races, all on good tracks with the most recent being at Ellerslie 30/03. Tis is a race which last race winners have a good record in. It’s Doris, Kindling Spark, and Nikaia are last race winners with a show of winning. Kindling Spirit may be the best of the trio because she has won at the course and distance. She is also going for her third win on end.

Robert Dennis is on fire with his team and is worth following at Sunday’s meeting at Invercargill. Here are the horses he has entered.

Race 1-Hastobeyou

Raced at G3 level last time. Drops in grade and distance. Handles all goijng.

Race 2-The Princie One

First run as a 3YO. Raced in listed grade last time where he ran 4th. Expected to be odds-on or close to it.

Race 3-Medina and Helly Belly

Medina is making her South Island debut. Has a 3kg claim. Needs soft/heavy going.

Helly Belly has only won on the all weather but has been placed in heavy ground. (go figure). Big run at Riverton last Saturday on South debut.

Race 5-Sacred Dream

Narrowly beaten at Riccarton last time. Hard to roll here.

Race 6-Missoni

Second at Riverton last time makes her the leading chance. Will be at short odds.

Race 8-The Royal Diva

Only win was in heavy going on the course and will be hard to beat with rain.

The Radiant One the danger

EARS BACK and THE RADIANT ONE are the two to beat in the Southland Stakes at Invercargill on Saturday. They both raced at black type level last time out with Ears Back finished within 2 lengths of Perfect Scenario in the White Robe Lodge Stakes 2 weeks ago and The Radiant One winning the Timaru Stakes. Ears Back carried 57kg and drops to 54kg under the handicap conditions. The Radiant One is up 2kg. If there is some rain about then WATCH OUT is the one to note. She is a real change of season horse and is likely to win a race sometime during Autumn.
