Astradeel picked for the Wairio Cup

ASTRADEEL is my selection for Sunday’s Wairio Cup in Invercargill. This horse handles heavy going and has taken on better fields than this. He finished third in the Riverton Cup on Easter Saturday. He finished fifth in the Great Autumn Stakes last time and that was on the fourth of May so he will be fit. He has a good record on Southland tracks.

PEECEE PUSSYCAT is a longshot to consider and has won in heavy going in the North Island but whether he can cope with a Southland heavy track is a question which we will get the answer to here.

Classic Diva improver for Riverton on Monday

Classic Diva is the improver for day 2 at Riverton. The Tyler trained mare may have finished 7th on Saturday but she has a huge weight drop thanks to a 4kg claimer. She has a good record at Riverton and is a likely improver here.

Classic Diva’s stable mate Zambezi Zipper is another to watch. She has won three races at Riverton and is a real wet tracker. She is coming off a seven day backup having raced at Gore 10/3 and Wingatui 17/3.

Gentle Ben will be going for 2 wins at the meeting in race 7 having won a maiden on day 1. This is a maiden he will run in again. Almanac is one for odds in this race.

Seikrid (race 8) and Diamond Riviere (race 6) are other good chances,

Henry Hubber hard to beat at Riverton

HENRY HUBBER is the one to beat in the Open Sprint at Riverton. He is a real Autumn specialist who won this very race last year. 1200m is his go and so is soft going. I understand that it is heavy at Riverton so that will suit him down to the ground. Watch for LIghtning Jack though. He is a class horse who is capable of figuring in the finish.

Emanon hard to beat at Riverton

EMANON won the fillies and mares race at Riverton a year ago and do the same this year. She is at least 10 rating points clear of anything else in the race, but there are two in form mares, The Grey Goose and Addictiv Passion who will be hard to beat. The GRey Goose won a 200k race at Wingatui last time but her problem is that she gets back and may find the drop back to 1400m challenging. Addictiv Passion beat Burgie last time and Burgie won the Breeders Stakes at Riccarton last week. That is good form.
