Relief Rally ticks a lot of Newbury Boxes

RELIEF RALLY is an outstanding chance in the Carnavon Stakes at Newbury on Saturday if he starts there. He has an outstanding record of four wins from six races and is unbeaten below Group 3 level. This is a listed race. Added to that is the fact that he was the beaten favourite at Newbury last time, that being a Group 3 race. JAMES DELIGHT is currently the second favourite. He has raced just once at black type company, finishing 9^th at G3 level at Newbury in April.

Heavy going for the Scottish Grand National

Heavy going has thrown a spanner in the works as far as Sail Away goes for the Grand National. His only wins have been on firm going. That is not to say that the state of the going will not improve enough for him to be a serious chance by Saturday, however, it is time to turn my attention to the others. BEAUPORT is one to watch. He won the Midlands Grand National in March in heavy going. It is interesting to see if any horse backs up from the Grand National at Aintree. MAHLA MISSION and MR INCREDIBLE are chances if running again. They suffered mishaps last Saturday and both handle heavy going. MACDERMOTT is the current favourite. He is a lightly tried 6 year old. He won last time out over 3 miles by 12 lengths and that was his first attempt at 3 miles+ which indicates that the longer distances could be something which he excels at. He is trained by Willie Mullins.

L’Eau Dusaid aiming to go one better in Ayr Champion Hurdle

• Iberico Lord the danger

The ex-French horse L’Eau Dusaid has not won since he was transferred to Dan Skelton

‘s stable but has run two seconds at his last two races against very strong fields. He finished second out of 17 at Cheltenham last time and 2^nd out of 21 at Newbury the time before. That is strong field and is my pick based on that. Iberico Lord has to be among the leading chances. He was pulled up last time at Cheltenham but has won two strong races in two of his previous three races before that, on at Newbury when he beat L’Easau Dusaid in an 87k race at Newbury and the other being a 56k race at Cheltenham. Doddiethegreat is good enough to plod into the minors but has no win or placed (1,2, or 3) form in races worth more than 16k.

Sail Away hard to beat in the Scottish Grand National on Saturday

If you are going to have a bet in the Scottish Grand National then I would strongly advise you to pay close attention to the weather. The reason being that SAIL AWAY is a very good chance of winning if he got firm going. It is likely that he will be withdrawn if the going is heavy. This horse has never gone a bad race on firm going. It is only when it gets  a bit heavy that he struggles. The other factor to note is that he has raced at Ayr just once and was successful that day. It was a year ago. He has a good record at 3 miles+ so the 4 mile distance should not be a problem. All of this has not gone unnoticed because Sail Away is one of the market leaders at 12/1.

NOTLONGTILLIMAY has a great record overall. He has only finished out of the money once in eight races and never over the steeples. He is the one to beat in the Future Champion Hurdle at Ayr. BALCO COASTAL is the danger. He won a strong race at Kempton 26/12 and last raced at Cheltenham in a G1. After his Kempton success he finished second in a Grade 1 chase at Sandown so has a bit of class. Backing both of these may be the way to go.

Scottish Grand National on Saturday

The Scottish Grand National takes place at Ayr racecourse on Saturday. I have been taking a look at some of the early favourites for the race. The current favourite is Kitty’s Light, the winner of the Elder Chase at Newcastle in February. That was over 4 miles. Kitty’s Light had raced over 4 miles only once prior to that and it was in the 2022 Scottish Grand National when finishing second as the favourite. Kitty’s Light is around the 4/1 mark which is rather short. Mr Incredible is there in the market at 12/1. He has raced three times at 3m + for a 221 form line. He finished second at Cheltenham last time out. Your Own Story was beaten just half a length at Haydock last time out. However, he has raced in small fields. It will be a shock for him to come up against a large field that will line up at Ayr. Empire Steel won at Kelso last time beating Le Milos. He has won 4 races with 3 of them being at Kelso. He is another that has mainly raced in small sized fields.
