Sail Away hard to beat in the Scottish Grand National on Saturday

Sail Away hard to beat in the Scottish Grand National on Saturday

If you are going to have a bet in the Scottish Grand National then I would strongly advise you to pay close attention to the weather. The reason being that SAIL AWAY is a very good chance of winning if he got firm going. It is likely that he will be withdrawn if the going is heavy. This horse has never gone a bad race on firm going. It is only when it gets  a bit heavy that he struggles. The other factor to note is that he has raced at Ayr just once and was successful that day. It was a year ago. He has a good record at 3 miles+ so the 4 mile distance should not be a problem. All of this has not gone unnoticed because Sail Away is one of the market leaders at 12/1.

Scottish Grand National on Saturday

Scottish Grand National on Saturday

The Scottish Grand National takes place at Ayr racecourse on Saturday. I have been taking a look at some of the early favourites for the race. The current favourite is Kitty’s Light, the winner of the Elder Chase at Newcastle in February. That was over 4 miles. Kitty’s Light had raced over 4 miles only once prior to that and it was in the 2022 Scottish Grand National when finishing second as the favourite. Kitty’s Light is around the 4/1 mark which is rather short. Mr Incredible is there in the market at 12/1. He has raced three times at 3m + for a 221 form line. He finished second at Cheltenham last time out. Your Own Story was beaten just half a length at Haydock last time out. However, he has raced in small fields. It will be a shock for him to come up against a large field that will line up at Ayr. Empire Steel won at Kelso last time beating Le Milos. He has won 4 races with 3 of them being at Kelso. He is another that has mainly raced in small sized fields.

Win My Wings selected to win SCottish Grand National

The Scottish Grand National is a 4m race held at Ayr race course.

Scottish Grand National

Win My Wings selected

Fortescue second best

WIN MY WINGS is the one to beat, well in my humble opinion anyway. He is going for a hat trick of wins. His overall record is 3 wins from 7 steeplechase races. His most recent win was in the Elder Chase at Newcastle which was run over 4 miles. This race is also being a 4m+ race. FORTESCUE is my second best. He also is a last race winner having won at Ascot last time. His record is 6 wins from 14 steeplechase races. Backing both horses may be the way to go here.

MIGHTY THUNDER WILL ATTEMPT TO JOIN OTHER DUAL SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL WINNERS

The Scottish Grand National is a popular event at Ayr racecourse.

Corach Rambler among top Scottish Grand National chances

CORACH RAMBLER has the record to suggest he may be good enough to take out the Scottish Grand National this Saturday. He has won three of his six chasing races with the most recent being at Cheltenham in March. He is unbeaten at Ayr, having won at his sole start there as a hurdler.

MIGHTY THUNDER will be going for his second Scottish Grand National. He will attempt to follow in the footsteps of other dual winners of the race which are Vicente (2016-17), Merigo (2010 and 2012), Androma (1984-85), Barona ((1975-76), and Queens Taste (1953-54). Might Thunder’s record this season does not inspire much confidence in his supporters as he has been pulled up in his last two races but the significant clue in his form line is that he has raced three times at 4m+ for a 121 form line so he definitely excels at those longer distances. Who knows, maybe he will try to do what Red Rum did in 1974 by completing the Scottish/English Grand National double.

SCOTTISH GRAND NATIONAL ON SUNDAY

Scottish Grand National (Ayr) 18 April

(Race will be on Sunday this year.)

GALVIN looks a good chance of taking out the Scottish Grand National at Ayr on Saturday. He has won his last five chases with the most recent being at Cheltenham when he won at 3m6f and has only another 2f further to run so the 4m distance shouldn’t really bother him since CHeltenham is a testing track. It will be interesting to see who else lines up in the race. I wonder if Tiger Roll will be there. He finished last at level weights at Aintree on Thursday but I think the others would have been too sharp for him over the shorter distances.

AYE RIGHT is one of the leading chances. He finished 3rd of 16 at Cheltenham in March, is very consistent and is certainly right in this. In his eight chasing starts he has won once and finished placed five times. His most notable place was a second to Cloth Cap in November in a field of 18. Cloth Cap was the unplaced favourite in Saturday’s Grand National. Aye Right is unbeaten at Ayr.

MIGHTY THUNDER has a terrific form line. He has won three of his five chasing starts. He finished second in the Midlands Grand National at his last start. He seems to be a specialist at 4 miles.

VINTAGE CLOUDS won at Cheltenham last time beating Happy Go Lucky who won at Cheltenham last time.

DINGO DOLLAR won last time out at Newcastle. He does not always put his best foot forward and is best taken on trust.
