L’Esau Dusaid picked in the Scottish Champion Hurdle

L’Eau Dusaid aiming to go one better in Ayr Champion Hurdle

  • Iberico Lord the danger

The ex-French horse L’Eau Dusaid has not won since he was transferred to Dan Skelton

‘s stable but has run two seconds at his last two races against very strong fields. He finished second out of 17 at Cheltenham last time and 2nd out of 21 at Newbury the time before. That is strong field and is my pick based on that. Iberico Lord has to be among the leading chances. He was pulled up last time at Cheltenham but has won two strong races in two of his previous three races before that, on at Newbury when he beat L’Easau Dusaid in an 87k race at Newbury and the other being a 56k race at Cheltenham. Doddiethegreat is good enough to plod into the minors but has no win or placed (1,2, or 3) form in races worth more than 16k.

Aintree Bowl-Gerry Colombe fancied

Aintree Bowl-Gerry Colombe fancied

(thursday)

GERRY COLOMBE is my pick for Thursday’s Aintree Bowl. He has never finished out of the first two in Chases in eight starts and that is good enough for me. He is the current favourite at 11/8.  He has been beaten just once as favourite and that was when he finished a close second at Cheltenham last year. The second favourite is SHISKIN, the winner of this race last year. He has won 10 of 15 starts but looking through his form line his defeats usually come at G1 level. Still, he is the one for Gerry Coombe to beat and at 7/2 he represents good odds if you are tempted to oppose the favourite

I Am Maximus picked for the Grand National

Vaniller seeking to go one better at Aintree

VANILLER finished second in last year’s Grand National at Aintree will be aiming to go one better this year. Looking through his form line it does appear that he excels once he gets to 3m+. He has never finished out of the first four in 3m chases, apart from his debut when he was pulled up at a point to point on his debut. 14 horses have finished second in the Grand National twice without winning it; that is a stat punters should take note of.

I AM MAXIMUS is certainly worth noting. This horse won last year’s Irish Grand National at Fairy House. I backed him that day and tipped him out as well. He has won three Chases out of nine chasing races, a 33% win-rate. His three wins all being at Fairy House. I Am Maximus has never fallen, been pulled up, or unseated rider in any of his races. That is no guarantee that he won’t come to any mishap because anything can happen in the Grand National.  I Am Maximus won his last race by 14 lengths, beating none other than Vaniller. He was evens favourite that day.

Iron Bridge picked in the Midlands Grand National

Iron Bridge picked in the Midlands Grand National

IRON BRIDGE is my selection for the Midlands Grand National on Saturday. This jumper is very consistent and does not know how to run a bad race. Two starts back he finished 2nd of 19 in the Welsh Grand National. He may have been beaten by 34 lengths but the going was heavy that day and he did have 17 horses behind him. Iron Bridge has raced once at Uttoxeter and that was a year ago when running second in the Novice Chase to AUTONOMOUS CLOUD who is one of his rivals in this race. FARCEUR DU LARGE is another one I like. He is going for his third win on end. It is worth noting that Autonomous Cloud has raced three times at Uttoxeter for a win and two seconds.

Sandown (UK)-Go Dante selected for Imperial Cup

Sandown (UK)-Go Dante selected for Imperial Cup

Bad the big danger

GO DANTE is selected to win the Imperial Cup at Sandown on Saturday in what is a very open race with many chances but there is a concern with him and that is the heavy going. He has raced on it just once and that was last time out when 3rd of 21 at Newbury. He finished 8 lengths behind the winner but did beat 18 horses home. BAD is a live chance. HE finished a head second last time out and was the beaten favourite. He has raced just once in heavy going and won that. Bad has finished second or third in his last four races and is worth backing each way. MAKING HEADWAY seems to like heavy going because he has raced twice in heavy going and won both times. The only bad race he has ever run was when fourth in a grade one hurdle at Aintree last April. GEORGIE GIRL and JUNKAROO are other horses to consider.

TAMURAS is selected in a very open Pendel Novices Chase at KEmpton. He has not finished out of the first three in chases and was within 2 lengths of the winner last time. He is the favourite for this. BLOW YOUR WAD and ARCLIGHT are both unbeaten at Kempton and are major contenders.

Elder Chase: Major Dundee the bolter

Elder Chase: Major Dundee the bolter

Punters who are looking for a value runner in the Elder Chase at Newcastle (UK) are advised to consider MAJOR DUNDEE at 16/1. This horse has a hood record at 4 miles. IN fact in two races over that distance he won the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter in March 2023 and in April 2022 finished third in the Scottish Grand National. He was pulled up at Warwick last time but it is an effort worth ignoring. There is usually a reason for a poor effort. FENLAND TIGER has the best form line with his latest win being at Newcastle. He has to be taken on trust as he won over 2m7f last time.

Irish House Best Favourite at Newbury

Newbury (UK) on Saturday

Irish House Best Favourite at Newbury

IRISH HOUSE seems to have the best credentials of all the favourites racing at Newbury on Saturday. He has won twice over jumps from four starts and is unbeaten at Newbury. At around the 13/8 mark he is not too short. He has a very good form line so is my nap of the day. Irish HOuse is in the 3:50

Oscastle Des Mottes is a very interesting runner. The ex-French horse is making his Debut for Willie Mullins. He has won two of his seven hurdles races. He is a horse who handles heavy going. He is at 3.15.

Edwardstone, at 7/4 for the 2.40 appears to be a false favourite. He has lost six races since he last won and finished over 20 lengths from the winner last time out. I will leave him.

Young Butler is the other favourite to note. He won over the course and distance last time out so has to be considered a chance in the 1.30. He is at 11/2; danger to Young Butler is Kyntara.

Famous Bridge selected for the Great Yorkshire Chase

FAMOUS BRIDGE has the form line to suggest that he can win the Great Yorkshire CHase at Doncaster on Saturday. He has gone out as the favourite in his last four races and will be at 7/1 on Saturday which are juicy odds compared to his previous races.

Jobon odds-on at Cheltenham

Jobon odds-on at Cheltenham

JOBON will be the long-odds-on favourite for the Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday. It will certainly be hard to bet against him despite him being at 1/4. The second favourite is at 6/1 so if you are brave, that might be a good each way option and you should at least get your money back if he runs second.
