Randwick Guineas-Tom Kitten top chance

Encap and Celestial Legend dangers

An even field will line up in the Randwick Guineas on Saturday. It will be hard to pinpoint the winner in one but form from the Hobartville Stakes is worth noting judging by the number of horses that have won the Randwick Guineas after racing in the Hobartville Stakes. Celestial Legend and Encap were the first two home in the Hobartsville STakes but I think that Tom KItten, fifth in the race will improve enough to win. He won the G1 Champion Stakes last Spring so has class. Ideally you want a horse who has raced in G1 company as a 3Yo, the ones in this race who have done that are Militarize, Tom KItten, and Ganbare.

Militarize brings a different form line into the race having finished second in the Apollo Stakes to multiple G1 winner Fangirl. If you are going to base your selections on class then he is going to be the leading chance. 

Ganbare finished 3rd to Tom Kitten in the Spring Champion Stakes in the Spring. He is unbeaten at 1600m which is worth noting.

His career record is 8-5-2-0. It is the record of a champion. KING CALORADO, VERDAD, and OTAGO were the next three in the C.S. Hayes Stakes. King Calorado has run two seconds this campaign.

It is hard to go past CAMPIONESSA in the Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. She finished a close second to Legarto in the Herbie Dyke Stakes last time. GOLD TRIP is a class horse who is capable of showiung up first up. She ran third in the race last time. FOXY CLEOPATRA is the other one I like. She ran second at Caulfield two weeks ago.

Asfoora Picked for the Oakleigh Plate

ASFOORA finished second in last year’s Oakleigh PLate behind Uncommon JJames and is a good chance to go one better despite a wide barrier draw. She finished second in the Rubiton Stakes last time as the $1.80 favourite. KALLOS beat her that day. He is her rival again but has an even wider draw to contend with. SGHIRRIPA, BENEDETTA, and KING’S GAMBIT are three horses with good chances in an open field. Sghirripa has a terrific strike-rate but is not a noted Group 1 performer and this is a big test. Benedetta finished 4th in the Silver Eagle last start. That is the only time she has ever been out of the first three. King’s Gambit has never finished out of the first three in six starts. As a three-year-old he has a pull in the weights. Jamie Kah rides him. RECOMMENDATION is consistent. He has run in the first three in 12 of his 14 starts and ran 3rd in the Australia Stakes last time.

Bodyguard and Stay Focused hard to beat in the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield

BODYGUARD and STAY FOCUSED were the first two home in the Blue Diamond Prelude for colts and Geldings two weeks ago and I think they are the two to focus on in the big one, the Blue Diamond. Bodyguard is unbeaten; he has that ex-factor about him which champions are made of. Stay Focused was well-backed in the Prelude and that being his second start is really to improve. Backing both horses might to the way to go here.

Zaaki finished intently for second to Giga Kick in the All Aged Stakes last time. That was his first run since a lay off and he will improve with it. ATISHU is a horse to consider. She won the G1 Queen of the Turf Stakes at Randwick last time. She is consistent.

Hawkesbury Cup-Jo Jo was a man picked

JO JO WAS A MAN is selected marginally over LORD ARDMORE who has the services of one J. Moriera. Jo Jo was a man has been in good form with two wins from his last four races. He finished fifth in a hot field at Randwick last week and this looks easier. Lord Ardmore has a poor record at 1600m which counts against him but you cannot rule out any horse which is ridden by J. Moriera if it is trained by Chris Waller.

JACQUINOT is going to be awfully hard to beat in the All aged Stakes at Randwick. He ticks a lot of boxes with the ones I like  being:

1 He has a 50% strike rate

2 He last raced in a G1

3 He is unbeaten at 1400m (7f) while several of his main contenders have not.

4 He is nicely drawn at 4.

ZAAKI, PRIVATE EYE, and HO O AMAZON are three others who could make their presence felt. Ho O Amazon is a Japanese horse and he is the dark horse.

Pennyweka picked to win Australian Oaks

Pennyweka must be a good chance to join Rising Romance, Bonnieval, and Sofia Rosa as New Zealand mares to have won the Australian Oaks. Pennyweka was very dominant when winning the NZ Oaks last time and will take a lot of beating if there is a sting out of the track. She handles soft/heavy going well. The Kiwis have a second string in the side in Polygon. She has had two runs in Australia for a 6^th and 7^th. The 2400m should suit her. Polygon won the Royal Stakes at Te Rapa on New Year’s Day. Firm going will suit her down to the ground.

Meridus good chance in the Bendigo Guineas

It is hard to judge some of the form in the Bendigo Guineas but MERIDUS won last time out at Flemington and that counts for something against this field. He is the second highest rated runner in the race behind MY BELLA MAE but My Bella Mae has no form at 1400m. She ran fifth at Moonee Valley last time. WALTZ ON BY also finished fifth at Moonee Valley last time. Horses that finished unplaced at the Valley sometimes win next time out. An interesting runner is RUNNING BY. She finished sixth of sixteen in the Inglis Sprint at Flemington last time. That was a hot field and she will find this easier. ELKINGTON ROAD raced in the G1 Australian Guineas last time and will find this an easier task.

MUNHAMEK is my pick for the Golden Mile. He is clearly the top-rated form horse at Bendigo plus he was an odds-on winner at the Valley 24/03. QUALITY TIME and RAMBLER REBEL finished third and fourth to Munhamek at Moonee Valley and one of them could beat him or at least give him a run for his money.
