Sunshine in Paris hard to beat in the All Aged Stakes

Chain of Lightning and Southport Tycoon the dangers

SUNSHINE IN PARIS finished out of the first three for the first time in the T J Smith Stakes when he was less than a length behind CHAIN OF LIGHTNING in fifth place. Sunshine in Paris is unbeaten at 1400m in his only run at that distance and that was at Randwick. She has a 50% strike-rate and that is what you need to look for in a race such as this. SOUTHPORT TYCOON and CHAIN OF LIGHTNING were both last race Group 1 winners and will be hard to roll here but Southport Tycoon won at 1600m last time and may find others too sharp here.

Mazu picked in the Hall Mark Stakes at Randwick

Mazu picked in the Hall Mark Stakes at Randwick

MAZU has a form line stacked full of G1 races and back to a G3 event he is likely to be more competitive, albeit with the top weight of 60kg, but over 1200m that will not be too much of an issue with a tight weight scale. Biggest danger will be VILANA who won this race last year. Vilana is first up and has won three times first up previously. James Cummings trains Vilana and the stable is known for getting their sprinters ready first up.

Manaal going for two G1s in a week

Manaal going for two G1s in a week

Linebacker strong chance

MANAAL won the Sires Produce Stakes in heavy going at Randwick last week so the extra 200m should not be an issue because it takes stamina to win in the wet, prior to that win she ran 5th in the Golden Slipper. The unbeaten LINEBACKER is the one she has to beat though. He will be suited by the 1600m. In both of his starts he was the very strong favourite. Backing these two may be the way to go here.

Lady Camelot top-weight in the Percy Sykes Stakes

Lady Camelot top-weight in the Percy Sykes Stakes

The old adage “weight does not matter in two-year old races will be put to the test in the Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick when the Golden Slipper winner LADY CAMELOT will carry 59kg. I think that against Group horses, weight will matter and there is a horse called DRIFTING who looks very smart. She has won twice and finished second from three races to date. She won smartly at Rosehill last time in a Group race at just her third start. Prior to that she was beaten narrowly in her only defeat. P & P Snowden trains Drifting.

Via Sistina picked at Randwick

Via Sistina picked at Randwick

It is hard to go past the two European imports VIA SISTINA and PLACE DU CARROUNSEL in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. They finished first and second respectively in the Ranvet Stakes on their Australian debuts and can be expected to improve. They also bring solid English form into the race. The best of the remainder has to be CASCADIAN because he has such a good record at Randwick and is improving with each race.

Olentia picked for the Queen of the Turf Stakes

Zougotcha and Atishu big chances

OLENTIA score a convincing win in the Emancipation Stakes two weeks later and can win again. She is under rated and it is just a matter of whether she can beat the hot shots in this. ZOUGOTCHA and ATISHU will be well-supported. They have Group 1 form. Zougotcha won the Coolmore Stakes last time while Atishu ran third in the Australia Cup. All three are trained by Chris Waller, who seems to have a very good record in the mares races. SEMANA is the other horse to consider after some good recent form.

Sydney Cup-Chairmans is the best guide

Sydney Cup is wide open

The Sydney Cup is a wide open contest and from what I have seen of the entrants I am inclined to go for those horses that raced last Saturday. Loft, Stockman, Circle of Fire, and So Dazzling are in this category and the winner could come from within this four. They raced in the Chairman’s Stakes in heavy going last Saturday so don’t be surprized if there are form reversals among them. It should be noted that eight recent Sydney Cup winners raced in the Chairman’s Stakes prior to winning the Sydney Cup and only The Offer won the lead up race. Circle of Fire will be ridden by British jockey Andrea Atzeni. The Roy Higgins Stakes at Flemington could provide some clues for the Sydney Cup. Major Beel, who ran fourth in that race is a likely improver. He won last year’s Australian Derby. Athabascan, who finished 4th in the Tancred Stakes is another improver, Tyler Schiller rides him.

Learning to Fly picked in the P J Bell Stakes at Randwick

Learning to Fly picked in the P J Bell Stakes at Randwick

Miraval Rose worth noting

LEARNING TO FLY finished fourth in the G1 Surround Stakes at Randwick 2/3 and that form should be good enough to win the P J Bell Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. at her second to last trace she ran second to Kimochi in the Light Fingers Stakes. MIRAVAL ROSE has never finished out of the first two and is expected to be ready for a good first up run. Her last two runs have been at Caulfield. KRISTILLI has a similar form line to learning to Fly in that she raced in the Surround Stakes and the Light Finger Stakes at her last two starts. She is unbeaten in heavy going which is a key factor if the forecast rains arrive.

Militarize picked for the Doncaster

Militarize picked for the Doncaster

MILITARIZE is in form for the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on Saturday. He has run two G1 placings at his last two starts. He has the class to take this out. Zac Purdon takes the ride. The Japanese galloper OBAMBURUMAI is going to be tough. He won the Golden Rose at Rosehill 4 November but has not raced since. He has obviously been set up for this. The Everest winner, THINK ABOUT IT is better than his recent form suggests. He ran fifth in the George Ryder Stakes last time out. 1 mile will not bother him.

Straight Charge selected for the Todman Stakes

Straight Charge selected for the Todman Stakes

STRAIGHT CHARGE has all of the right credentials to take out the Todman Stakes at Randwick. He has a 211 form line from his three races and won the Silver Slipper last time out. Two previous Silver Slipper winners have won this race. SWITZERLAND is going to be the biggest danger to him though. He was an odds-on winner of the Pierro Stakes at Randwick last time out. You have always got to respect a winner on the course in two year old races. Backing these two horses may well be the way to go. BODYGUARD is the other horse to consider. He is very smart and adds to the puzzle.
