MAZU has a form line stacked full of G1 races and back to a G3 event he is likely to be more competitive, albeit with the top weight of 60kg, but over 1200m that will not be too much of an issue with a tight weight scale. Biggest danger will be VILANA who won this race last year. Vilana is first up and has won three times first up previously. James Cummings trains Vilana and the stable is known for getting their sprinters ready first up.

It is hard to go past the two European imports VIA SISTINA and PLACE DU CARROUNSEL in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. They finished first and second respectively in the Ranvet Stakes on their Australian debuts and can be expected to improve. They also bring solid English form into the race. The best of the remainder has to be CASCADIAN because he has such a good record at Randwick and is improving with each race.

Miraval Rose worth noting

LEARNING TO FLY finished fourth in the G1 Surround Stakes at Randwick 2/3 and that form should be good enough to win the P J Bell Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. at her second to last trace she ran second to Kimochi in the Light Fingers Stakes. MIRAVAL ROSE has never finished out of the first two and is expected to be ready for a good first up run. Her last two runs have been at Caulfield. KRISTILLI has a similar form line to learning to Fly in that she raced in the Surround Stakes and the Light Finger Stakes at her last two starts. She is unbeaten in heavy going which is a key factor if the forecast rains arrive.

KINTYRE has a chance of black type glory in the Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill. He ran third in the Phar Lap Stakes last time out and there is every indication that he will get the distance of 1500m. SALTCOATS is expected to be his biggest danger. He finished 8th in the Phar Lap but has never finished out of the first two twice in a row and James McDonald rides him.

Legarto v Mr Brightside at Flemington

The matchup between Legarto and Mr Brightside will be very interesting on Saturday. Both horses were beaten favourites last time out. Legarto was the $1.20 favourite when fishing second at Ellerslie last time out while Mr Brightside was the $2.00 favourite when running second in the All Star Mile. Mr Brightside finished placed in the Cox PLate last year over 2040m but a strong 2000m at Flemington is a different kettle of fish and both of these two will be racing at a distance further than their best. ATISHU could beat them. She has won three times at Flemington including the McKinnon Stakes at 2000m and has won three times at the distance.

Orchestral has taken the New Zealand racing scene by storm this season and is set to do likewise in Australia. She won the Magic Millions 3YO, the Avondale Guineas, and the NZ Derby and now takes on the Aussies. Zardozi and Kimochi are expected to finish second and third behind Orchestral. They are rated on 107, 102, and 98 respectively with the next highest rated runner being Autumn Angel on 88. Zardozi won the Phar Lap Stakes last time while Kimochi ran third in the G1 Coolmore Classic.

PORT LOCKROY finished 5th in the G1 Champion Stakes at just his sixth start and I think that form should be good enough for him to win the Canberra Guineas on Sunday. GOLD BULLION has a similar form line but I think 1400m is too short for him. XIDAKI was just a maiden winner but it was a strong race which he won and he is capable of going on with it. THUNDERLIPS is the other horse to consider.

So United picked for the Canberra Cup

SO UNITED finished within a length of the winner in the Parramatta Cup 24/2 and that form should be good enough to win Sunday’s Canberra Cup on Sunday. ALMANIA was narrowly beaten in the same race and is one of the major players. Top weight BOIS D’ARGENT has not raced since the Caulfield Cup but has a great first up record and is good enough to win despite the 58.5kg he has to carry.
