Mercurial picked for the Newmarket Handicap

MERCURIAL is a last race course and distance winner and with Opie Bosson in the saddle you cannot go wrong with her. She has won 4 races on good going so obviously prefers it firm. Opie Bosson is riding her at 56kg which is about his limit. Johnny Johnny is the top weight and has to be respected especially if there is some rain about. He finished 5th in the Counties Bowl last time and won 4 in a row before that.

It is worthwhile going over Opie Bosson’s rides at Trentham.

Race 4-Captured by Love

Won on debut at Tauherenikau 12/11. Bosson will ride at 55kg which says a lot about her chances. This horse is trained by Walker/Bergerson

Race 6-Tarzetto

A last race winner at New Plymouth this horse has had just the two starts.

Race 7-Insatiable

Another Te Akau runner. This horse raced twice at Riccarton for two fourths. He has no form at the distance though.

Race 8-Fashion Shoot

Won the mares race at Riccarton but this is a big step up. Has never won at the mile.

Race 9-Nereus

A very promising type with just three previous runs for a 21X3 form line. First start at 1600m but it will suit him.

Best chances appear to be Captured by Love, Tarzetto, and Nereus.

OPIE BOSSON THE JOCKEY TO FOLLOW AT RICCARTON

Opie Bosson in for a great day

If there is a rider to follow at Riccarton on Saturday it is Opie Bosson who has a choice book of rides. He is on Demand Respect (race 3), Radegast (race 4), Nouverre (race 8), and Supreme Khan (race 9). 

The feature is the 2000 Guineas. Nouverre is favourite. This is a favourites race but this year the race looks a bit more open. Field of Gold and Dark Destroyer I think will be hard to beat.

The Pitman stable have a good strike-rate in the 20k maidens at Riccarton and have one called Sharpie making its debut in race 1. Pitman also had Lennon and another debutante Burgundy Gold running in race 1. Lennon has finished in a place once in nine starts and that was in heavy going. The reason why I chose Sharpie over Burgundy Gold is that Sharpie is ridden by a NOrth Island jockey and Burgundy Gold is not.
