Naval College picked for Doomben Cup

Naval College picked for Doomben Cup

NAVAL COLLEGE is picked for the Doomben Cup despite finishing ninth first up in the Hollindale Stakes. That race two weeks ago was his first ever race in heavy going and with better going (hopefully) at Doomben on Saturday, he can upset the better fancied runners. He has a very good record of sixteen starts for six wins, four seconds, and one third. He had won three races on end prior to his layoff. KOVALICA is expected to be the main danger. He finished third to NUMERIAN in the Hollindale Stakes. He has never won in heavy going so some better ground will suit him. Kovalica was in form at the Queensland Carnival this time last year but has not recaptured that form. His last race was his first shown of form as a four year old. Numerian upset punters two weeks ago at 30/1. He has to prove that he can back that up. This field is no stronger so he has a chance again. SERPENTINE is worth a mention. This horse won twice on good going in Sydney in the Autumn then finished fourth in the Sydney Cup. He needs good going though as he has never won on anything else. Serpentine won the English Derby about three or four years ago.
